[BigBang] 'Monster' MV Review

Since BigBang started releasing the teasers for this MV, I have anticipated a GREAT comeback song. I was certainly proven wrong, since even BRILLIANT is an understatement to describe this song and MV. The very first time I watched the MV, I couldn't move a muscle until the song was finished. And after that, all I could say was... "WOW..."

I normally spazz a lot when I watch K-Pop MVs. With 'Monster,' I don't even dare to spazz. It almost feels inappropriate due to the depth and the meaning of the song. From the very start, how the MV begins with the first person point of view and the sound of hard animal breathing, it instantly drew me into the MV. What a way to involve the viewers! It's like you can't help but being pulled into feeling or experiencing the MV yourself. Then the piano comes in -- if it didn't melt my heart away. But to add to that, TOP starts to rap and G-Dragon's full of emotion part follows. I totally skipped at least 3 heartbeats...

The attention to details in the song is ridiculous -- and I'm saying that in a good way. The syncopation at the end of TOP and G-Dragon's first lines hit the spot like there is no other. And the way they weave in into each other's line? Wow, just wow... All instruments join forces as Taeyang starts singing. The tone for the song is set and my jaw was already on the floor. The minor tone of the song combined with the upbeat tempo give you this push-and-pull feeling, a contradiction of emotions. The chorus is powerful, yet sad at the same time. I mean, this song makes you feel so much emotions within your body which I think was the reason I literally couldn't move.

Seungri's part is soft and tender; it's definitely carried well with his voice. But then we're given another contradiction with G-Dragon and TOP's strong rap parts. I gotta say that Daesung nails the chorus. I feel like he's speaking directly to me and I just wanna run to him to tell him he's not a monster to me. Seriously.

The bridge comes along, and at first, I felt like it was a little abrupt. But then I realized it's one of many contradictions contained in the song. The collaboration between Seungri, Daesung, and Taeyang's voices is flawless. It amazes me how much they know each other's voices and can make them work together to create the best effect ever. The bridge then ends with a dissonant piano chord. OMG, beautiful!

The very last part, "I think I'm sick", sealed the deal for me. To say it in a few words, this song is SOLID. From the first to the last note, I can tell that each one was thoughtfully composed. For the whole duration of the song, I had goosebumps. I can only say this for a few songs, but 'Monster' is definitely one of the songs that pierces through my soul with its melody and emotions. As I said in the beginning, BRILLIANT is an understatement.

Now that I've dug into every bit of the song, I can't NOT say something about the visual effects in the MV. Are you kidding me??? The explosions, the numbers on their skin, the glowing eyes, the appearing-disappearing tattoos, colors, and patterns on their bodies and faces, the fast-slow motions -- top notch. The only o____O moment I had while I was watching the MV was Taeyang's "unique" round hair-do? But I do have to admit even that fits the song perfectly, so I don't have any complaints.

To end, I just wanna declare that for me... 'Monster' is the best MV and song in 2012 to date. And it's pretty obvious that I'm not the only one who thinks that, since the MV gained over 1.4 million views on YouTube within 14 hours since the song was uploaded. That's about 1666.67 views every MINUTE. That has to break some sort of a record.

BigBang, well done!

  1. I agree with you ABSOLUTELY!!! This song comes on TV and Im TRANFIXED!I CANNOT MOVE! The first part ..piano....TOP,GD first few lines is just INCREDIBLE. Idont know what to call the lines GD does....Its different from Rap.....its not singing/or speaking but its THE most beautiful sensation when he does it and I can't get enough ofit.....I get chills every time.....The part where Taeyong's voice suddenly merges in after that with that slightly nasal tone he has is just beautiful too. Daesung and Seungri are so melodious too.....they all blend so well....Each of them is perfection in every way when they do their different parts......Then when GD does a line again and TOP comes in and the big explosion after that.....KILLS me! Then the bit where they are gently and melodiously singing the inbetween bit......so tentatively as is wondering whats happening next....and then they realize the danger and run out.....And I LOVE GD's three looks in this...He is SENSATIONAL!!! It seems he has several different faces AND several different voices.......The raspy rap In Fantastic Baby, the high voiced part in Love Song, the Oh-SO melodious way he starts Blue off which then turns into his trademark slang-style sound....The low refrain in Somebody to Love...and then THIS!Im new to Kpop....I have NO idea what the words are, I just know through this unique group that its a VERY beautiful language.....THANK YOU BIGBANG for giving me something so new and so fabulous.......and being able to discover each new song I havent heard before......

  2. And just to add one thing....There is something about the style of the first part [TOP,GD] in Monster and also the whole style of LOve Song, from TOP's first line onwards, which is VERY French/Italian......
